Electricity, Water Tariffs Reduced Today, as PURC Announces New Rates

By ZED NEWSROOM

Utility consumers across Ghana will begin paying less for electricity and water from today, April 1, following a tariff reduction announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

The Commission says electricity tariffs have been reduced by 4.81 per cent, while water charges have also been cut by 3.06 per cent for the second quarter of the year, offering some relief to households and businesses amid ongoing cost-of-living concerns.

In a statement, the PURC explained that the new rates take immediate effect as part of its routine quarterly tariff review process, which is designed to align utility pricing with prevailing economic conditions.

According to the Commission, the latest adjustments reflect key developments in the economy, including movements in the exchange rate between the Ghana cedi and the US dollar, trends in domestic inflation, changes in the electricity generation mix, and fluctuations in the cost of fuel, particularly natural gas used in thermal power generation.

The PURC noted that these variables play a critical role in determining the cost of utility service delivery and must be periodically reviewed to ensure sustainability within the sector while protecting consumers.

The Commission further emphasized that the downward adjustment demonstrates ongoing efforts to balance the interests of utility providers and consumers, while maintaining the financial viability of the energy and water sectors.

Meanwhile, in a significant policy shift, the PURC has introduced a new tariff structure for commercial electric vehicle (EV) charging. This is the first time such a pricing regime has been implemented in Ghana, marking an important step toward supporting the country’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

The Commission says the move is expected to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles and position Ghana to benefit from emerging global trends in green energy and sustainable transportation.
