Samson Adamu Named Interim CAF General Secretary

Samson Adamu of Nigeria has been appointed interim General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after Véron Mosengo-Omba stepped down from the role.
The appointment, confirmed by CAF’s Executive Committee and Congress at a meeting in Cairo on Sunday, places Adamu in charge of the organisation’s daily operations. CAF vice-presidents will oversee the process of selecting a permanent General Secretary in the coming months.
Mosengo-Omba’s resignation ends a tenure that had faced growing scrutiny in recent months. His departure came after a Swiss investigation into alleged financial misconduct, which was closed due to lack of evidence.
In a statement, Mosengo-Omba said decided to step down to focus on personal projects.
”After more than 30 years of an international career devoted to promoting football that unites people, educates, and creates opportunities, I have decided to step down to focus on personal projects. Now that I have cleared the suspicions directed at me, I can retire with peace of mind, leaving CAF stronger than ever, he noted.
CAF has recently faced criticism over several high-profile decisions, including the controversial ruling that stripped Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory after the final result was overturned.
Concerns about governance have also been raised following the last-minute postponement of the Women’s AFCON tournament.
