ECG Announces Planned Outages in Accra

The Electricity Company of Ghana has announced a large-scale transformer replacement and upgrade project that will result in temporary power outages across parts of Accra. The initiative, approved by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, is aimed at strengthening the national grid and improving electricity reliability.

In a statement, ECG said, “the Electricity Company of Ghana wishes to inform our cherished customers and the general public that, following approval by the Minister, ECG will commence a major transformer replacement and upgrade exercise in selected parts of Accra.”

The project will focus on twelve transformers across six primary substations, including Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa and Lashibi. According to ECG, the upgrade will increase transformer capacity from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA, representing a significant boost in load-handling capability of up to 50 percent. The company explained that the intervention is necessary to address system overloads and frequent outages caused by rapid urbanisation and increasing demand.

Work is scheduled to begin on April 8 and end on April 10, 2026. ECG described the exercise as more than routine maintenance, noting that it is a critical engineering upgrade designed to future-proof substations. It said the move will enhance voltage stability and protect homes and businesses from fluctuations and equipment damage.

The company acknowledged that the installation process will require “brief planned power outages” in affected communities. It stressed that these interruptions are “infrastructure-related” and not a return to widespread load shedding, but rather a necessary step toward delivering a “more reliable and efficient electricity service.”

ECG further indicated that a detailed timetable will be published to help residents and businesses “make the necessary arrangements” during the outage period. It added that efforts are underway to “minimise the duration and impact of these outages,” reflecting its commitment to customer service.

The project also aligns with broader efforts to improve efficiency in the energy sector. ECG noted that modern transformers reduce system losses and support a more sustainable electricity distribution network, in line with national energy transition goals.
