Acting Roles and Public Scrutiny Can Strain Marriages — Kwaku Manu

Ghanaian actor and filmmaker Kwaku Manu has opened up about the pressures actors face in maintaining stable marriages, saying the nature of their work and constant public attention often create challenges in their relationships.
Speaking in an interview, the popular Kumawood actor explained that certain roles performed in movies, particularly romantic scenes, can sometimes lead to misunderstandings between actors and their partners.
According to him, watching such scenes together with a spouse or partner can easily spark tension at home.
“Sometimes when an actor is watching his or her own movie with a partner while playing a kissing role, it brings problems at home,” he said.
Kwaku Manu also noted that the timing of movie releases can further complicate matters. He explained that actors often shoot films before getting married, but those movies may only be released after they have entered a relationship or marriage.
“When most of the industry players get married, the kind of role they play in movies mostly affects the marriage. It could be that when the actor got married, he wasn’t married yet, but by the time the movie would come out, the partner would be there,” he explained.
Beyond the nature of movie roles, the actor said the demanding schedule of the profession can also put significant strain on relationships, especially when partners do not fully understand the realities of the industry.
“If they don’t understand the job, there will always be misunderstandings. The job consumes time, so you could be so overwhelmed and forget you have a family to spend time with,” he stated.
He stressed that having a supportive and understanding partner is crucial for actors who hope to maintain successful relationships.
“Because of all these things, if you don’t get a partner who understands what the job comes with, the marriage or relationship wouldn’t work,” he added.
Kwaku Manu further highlighted the impact of public scrutiny on celebrities’ private lives, saying constant monitoring by fans and observers can also fuel tension.
“People will always be monitoring your life and updating your partner wherever you go. They get all the information about who we talk to,” he said.
According to him, the pressure from both professional demands and public attention sometimes leads many entertainment industry players to believe that sustaining marriage within the industry is extremely difficult.
