MoH Secures Funds to Pay Over 14,000 Trainee Health Workers
The Ministry of Health (MoH) has secured financial clearance to pay thousands of health professionals undertaking their mandatory service across the country.
In a statement issued on March 13 and signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Tony Goodman, the ministry said approval from the Ministry of Finance covers the payment of allowances and salaries for 14,279 rotation nurses and midwives, as well as 637 medical and dental house officers. The move is aimed at clearing salary arrears and improving the payment system for trainee health workers.
According to the ministry, the financial clearance follows a series of engagements between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance to ensure that newly trained health professionals receive the financial support they need during their mandatory service and professional training period.
“The Ministry of Health has secured financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance for the payment of allowances and salaries for 14,279 rotation nurses and midwives, as well as 637 medical and dental house officers,” the statement said.
The ministry explained that the approval for rotation nurses and midwives covers several professional categories, including Registered General Nurses, Registered Midwives, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Registered Community Health Nurses, and Registered Public Health Nurses. These nurses began their rotation last year and are expected to complete the programme later this year.
In addition, financial clearance has been granted for the payment of salaries to 637 medical and dental house officers. These professionals graduated from both public and private medical schools, successfully passed the Medical and Dental Council examinations, and were formally inducted into service on November 12, 2025.
The ministry noted that the approval will help clear outstanding payment backlogs that have accumulated over previous years.
Officials say the move will also pave the way for the implementation of a new policy designed to ensure that health professionals undergoing mandatory service receive their allowances on a monthly basis.
