Prince Tagoe Defends Black Stars Bonuses Amid $13.7m 2026 World Cup Budget Debate

Former Ghana international Prince Tagoe has defended the payment of appearance fees and bonuses to Black Stars players amid renewed debate over the team’s budget for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana has announced a projected budget of $13.7 million for the tournament in North America, with a portion allocated to player appearance fees and performance bonuses.

The inclusion of such payments has long attracted criticism from sections of the public, who argue that representing the country should be viewed purely as national service.

However, Tagoe believes players deserve to be compensated for their commitment and professionalism.

“Paying players appearance fees and bonuses should never be an issue. Everyone who works hard to become a professional deserves his money,” he said in an interview with Sporty FM.

The former striker maintained that footballers dedicate years of training and sacrifice to reach the highest level and should not be faulted for receiving financial rewards tied to major tournaments.

Ghana have been drawn against Panama, Croatia and England in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, as the Black Stars prepare for their fifth appearance at the global showpiece.
