Instant Loan Platforms Face Growing Concerns over Borrower Risks

By Lois Amanor

Instant loan apps are fast becoming popular in Ghana, giving users quick access to emergency funds through mobile apps and USSD codes. However, experts warn that while these services provide speed and convenience, they also carry risks.

Speaking on the ZED Tech Show on ZED 101.9 FM, Mr. John Pabi Ntifo, Product Architect for Credit and Infrastructure, explained that these platforms collect data points, score them, and then determine the maximum loan amount available to a customer. In many cases, users can see their loan limit within seconds and decide whether to borrow the full amount or a smaller portion.

He noted that telco-based loans are now very popular in Ghana, with many people relying on them for emergencies. However, he cautioned that these loans often come with limits. “People have dreams and projects they want to work on, but telco loans usually provide only small amounts. They are good for emergencies but not for bigger financial needs,” he said.

Mr. Ntifo stressed that while instant loans offer speed and convenience, they also carry risks. High interest rates, strict repayment terms, and reliance on personal data can trap borrowers in cycles of debt. He urged users to be mindful of how much they borrow and to avoid maxing out their loan limits unnecessarily.

He further advised that there are smarter alternatives for those seeking larger amounts at lower interest rates. Traditional financial institutions, credit unions, and structured lending platforms can provide more sustainable options. “We must look beyond short-term fixes. There are other ways and places where people can access bigger loans with lower interest. That is where real financial growth lies,” he explained.

Mr. Ntifo emphasized that Ghanaian consumers should balance convenience with caution. While instant loan apps can be lifesavers in emergencies, they should not replace long-term financial planning. He encouraged listeners to explore partnerships, savings schemes, and formal credit systems that can support bigger projects and reduce dependence on high-interest emergency loans.

As instant loan apps continue to grow in popularity, experts warn that without careful use, they could create more financial stress than relief. The key, Mr. Ntifo concluded, is to use them wisely and always consider smarter, more sustainable alternatives.
