Ghana Ready for 5G Rollout to Drive Economic Growth – MTN Group CEO

MTN Group CEO, Ralph Mupita, has underscored the transformative potential of 5G technology, stating that Ghana is ready to deploy the next-generation network once regulatory approval is secured.

According to him, the introduction of 5G will significantly enhance digital services and stimulate economic growth across multiple sectors.

“Being available in Ghana would transform and accelerate growth,” he said, stressing that the technology will improve efficiency in key industrial operations and expand access to high-quality connectivity.

He explained that one of the immediate benefits of 5G lies in fixed wireless access for homes. “More and more citizens and communities are consuming digital services at home. When you bring in 700 megahertz or 3500 megahertz spectrum, you enable fixed wireless access. You come home and digital services are available, work from home, gaming solutions, entertainment. 5G is a great technology for enabling homes to be self-sufficient,” he noted.

Beyond residential use, he pointed to industrial applications, particularly in mining and logistics. Drawing from experiences in South Africa and Zambia, he said 5G-powered private networks have improved operational efficiency in mines.

“We’ve seen 5G work in mining in South Africa and Zambia. We’ve trialed private networks that enable mines to be a lot more efficient,” he said, adding that similar deployments in China have demonstrated strong results.

He also referenced markets such as Nigeria, where 5G has been rolled out, noting that connection quality has improved significantly.

“The quality of the connection is so much better. There are real, tangible benefits for consumers, for the country, as well as for businesses,” he stated.

While acknowledging that 5G will not solve every challenge, he described it as “a meaningful accelerator for socio-economic development,” capable of strengthening service delivery and supporting Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.
