Ethiopia’s President Welcomes Israel’s President for Talks on Strengthening Ties

Ethiopia’s President Taye Atske Selassie welcomed Israel’s President Isaac Herzog to Addis Ababa on Wednesday for a two day visit aimed at deepening political and diplomatic relations. The meeting took place at the Presidential Palace, with Herzog also holding talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Herzog’s trip comes at a sensitive time, just weeks after Israel’s controversial recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. The move has sparked debate across the Horn of Africa, and analysts believe Herzog’s visit is part of a wider diplomatic effort to expand Israel’s influence in the region. There is speculation that Herzog may encourage Ethiopia to follow suit, especially after Ethiopia signed a 2024 agreement with Somaliland granting it access to a port.

However, regional powers remain cautious. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that recognizing Somaliland could destabilize the Horn of Africa, urging countries to maintain the current status quo.

During their talks, President Selassie emphasized Ethiopia’s position on Middle East peace, stating that his country supports a two state solution to resolve the Israel Palestine conflict. Herzog welcomed Ethiopia’s stance and expressed appreciation for the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel, describing it as a cultural and social bridge that strengthens ties between the two nations.

The visit also highlights Ethiopia’s growing role in regional diplomacy. As a landlocked country seeking stronger international partnerships, Ethiopia’s engagement with Israel could open new opportunities in trade, technology, and security cooperation. For Israel, the trip underscores its push to build influence in Africa, particularly in the Horn, where strategic alliances are increasingly important.

Observers say Herzog’s meetings in Addis Ababa will be closely watched for signs of Ethiopia’s position on Somaliland recognition. While Ethiopia has already deepened its ties with the territory through the port agreement, formal recognition would mark a major shift in regional politics.

Herzog’s visit is therefore seen as more than symbolic. It reflects Israel’s determination to strengthen its presence in Africa while navigating sensitive issues that could reshape alliances in the Horn of Africa.

Looking ahead, both governments are expected to explore new areas of collaboration, including investment, education, and technology transfer.
