The Government has issued a travel advisory urging Ghanaian nationals in Mexico to exercise extreme caution following violent unrest triggered by a major security operation by Mexican authorities.
The advisory, released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, follows an operation conducted by Mexican security forces on February 22, 2026, which reportedly resulted in the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
According to the Ministry, the operation has sparked coordinated retaliatory attacks by cartel elements across several Mexican states, leading to widespread insecurity.
“In view of the unfolding situation in Mexico, the Government of Ghana wishes to advise Ghanaian nationals travelling to or residing in any of the affected cities in Mexico to exercise extreme caution in their movement and refrain from non-essential travel,” the statement said.
The affected areas include Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Oaxaca.
The unrest has reportedly been marked by armed clashes, arson attacks on vehicles, road blockages and other acts of violence, resulting in casualties and significant disruption to daily life.
The Ministry further urged Ghanaian citizens within the affected jurisdictions to remain in close contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission for support if necessary.
“Ghanaian citizens in the jurisdiction are encouraged to maintain communication with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., which is concurrently accredited to Mexico, for consular assistance if the need arises,” the statement added.
While expressing concern over the security situation, the Government of Ghana also conveyed solidarity with Mexico.
“The Government of the Republic of Ghana conveys its solidarity to the Government of the United Mexican States and expresses its confidence in the ability of the Mexican authorities to bring the situation under control,” the Ministry noted.
The ministry has advised travellers to monitor official updates and adhere strictly to safety directives issued by local authorities as the situation continues to evolve.
