Vinicius Fires Real Madrid to First-Leg Victory Amid Racism Allegations in Lisbon

Vinícius Júnior scored a stunning second-half winner as Real Madrid secured a 1-0 victory over Benfica in their UEFA Champions League play-off first leg in Lisbon, a match overshadowed by allegations of racist abuse.

The encounter at the Estádio da Luz was halted for 10 minutes following an incident involving the Brazilian forward shortly after his decisive goal.

Vinícius broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half, curling a magnificent strike beyond Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin to hand the visitors the advantage.

The forward was subsequently booked for an exuberant celebration and became involved in a heated exchange with Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni. He then approached referee François Letexier while gesturing towards the opposition winger, before walking off the pitch alongside several team-mates as the game was temporarily suspended.

Play eventually resumed, with 12 minutes of additional time added to compensate for the stoppage. During that period, an object was thrown from the crowd, striking Vinícius on the arm as he prepared to take a corner.

Benfica manager José Mourinho was shown two yellow cards in the 85th minute and will miss the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium next Wednesday.

Before the breakthrough, Real had threatened on multiple occasions. Vinícius fired narrowly wide after a defence-splitting pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold found Federico Valverde in space. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was also called into action to deny Fredrik Aursnes at the other end.

Kylian Mbappé came close on several occasions before the interval, blazing over after a clever back heel from Vinícius and later being denied by Trubin. Arda Güler also saw an effort saved as Benfica held firm until the break.

However, the Portuguese side struggled to mount a meaningful response after Vinícius’ spectacular strike, as Real delivered a composed away performance to take a slender advantage into the second leg.

The match came just 19 days after the dramatic conclusion to their league-phase meeting, when Trubin scored a remarkable 89th-minute header to secure Benfica’s play-off spot on goal difference.

Benfica will look to overturn the deficit when the sides meet again in Madrid on Wednesday, 25 February (20:00 GMT).
