Rama Blak Urges Aspiring Musicians to Pursue Their Passion Early

Awura Ama Agyapong, popularly known as Rama Blak, has encouraged young women and aspiring musicians to follow their dreams without delay. Speaking on Highlife Jam on ZED FM, she shared insights from her own journey and the challenges of breaking into the music industry.

“I’ll tell her to go for it. She shouldn’t wait as long as I did. I became a professional musician at 25. That’s very late. So if it’s something you want to do, you should go for it,” Rama Blak said.

The singer emphasized that building experience and exposure early in one’s career is critical. “The more exposure, the more you build a repertoire, the more you gain experience, and the more you enjoy the process. If that’s what you want to do professionally, start as early as you can,” she said.

When asked about advice for fellow women in music, she was candid. “I’m not very discriminative. I’d say there’s room for anyone interested in pursuing a music career. It’s really rough out there, and sometimes very discouraging, but passion is what keeps you going. Without it, you might end up giving up, especially in this country,” she noted.

Rama Blak credited her time at the University of Ghana music department for shaping her path. “I met amazing people and very good musicians who were willing to record my songs for me at very low prices. It gave me a solid foundation,” she explained.

Reflecting on gender dynamics in the music scene, she recounted a conversation with a professor. “Professor Collins said that in the past, it was not more conducive for women to travel and perform. Now, things are different, but you still get the recognition you deserve if you work hard.”

Despite challenges, Rama Blak remains optimistic for the next generation of musicians. “If music is your passion, put yourself in the right environment, start early, and never give up. That’s the key,” she advised.
