MIIF Sets the Pace at African Mining Indaba 2026

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) has commenced its participation at the African Mining Indaba 2026 with a series of high-level engagements designed to strengthen partnerships, attract investment, and advance sustainable mining practices in Ghana.

The engagements followed the official opening of the conference at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), one of the world’s largest and most influential platforms for mining dialogue and investment. The 2026 edition of the African Mining Indaba has brought together thousands of delegates, including government officials, mining companies, financial institutions, and development partners, to deliberate on the future of Africa’s mining industry.

Held under the theme “Stronger Together: Progress Through Partnerships,” this year’s conference underscores collaboration as a critical driver of sustainable development and long-term value creation across the sector.

The conference was formally opened on Monday, February 9, 2026, by the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis. In his address, the Mayor welcomed delegates and emphasised the central role of mining in building resilient African economies, supporting the global energy transition, and delivering inclusive growth.

He called for deeper collaboration between governments, investors, and industry players, stressing that Africa’s mineral wealth must be transformed into shared prosperity through partnership-driven approaches. Mayor Hill-Lewis also highlighted the importance of predictable regulatory frameworks, strong institutions, and government-led infrastructure development in sustaining investor confidence.

Drawing on an African proverb to reinforce the conference’s central message of unity and shared responsibility, he concluded: “The one who joins the hand has the right to the meat.”

With the conference officially underway, MIIF launched a packed schedule of strategic meetings led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Justina Nelson. She was supported by Board Members Hon. Yakubu Mohammed, MP for Ahafo Ano South-east, and Ms Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, alongside Chief Technical Officer Mr Kwabena Barning and Head of Investment Mr Ernest Attiso.

Key engagements included meetings with Asanko Gold Mine Ghana Limited, AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Limited, and Gold Fields Ghana Limited. Discussions focused on potential collaboration in areas such as streaming arrangements, foreign exchange considerations, sustainability initiatives, and the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles.

Beyond commercial returns, environmental stewardship featured prominently. The companies expressed commitment to working with MIIF’s ESG and Sustainability teams to support the reforestation of mined-out areas, reinforcing shared responsibility for land restoration and long-term environmental management.

Social impact also formed a central pillar of discussions. The companies reaffirmed support for MIIF’s Women from Mining Communities (WomCom) Programme, pledging collaboration on STEM education initiatives to increase opportunities for women and girls in mining communities and expand female participation in technical and leadership roles within the sector.

By the close of the first day, MIIF had established a strong presence at the Indaba, translating the conference’s call for partnership into concrete engagements. The Fund’s early interactions positioned it as a key national institution committed to balancing commercial performance with environmental responsibility and inclusive growth in Ghana’s mining industry.
