Quantum Science Central to Africa’s Future – Education Minister

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has emphasised that quantum science and innovation are critical to Africa’s long-term development, stressing that education remains the strongest foundation for scientific advancement on the continent.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ2025) in Accra, Mr Iddrisu said the convergence of scientists, policymakers and educators from around the world highlights a shared global recognition that science and innovation continue to drive human progress.

He noted that UNESCO’s designation of 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology reflects the growing importance of quantum science in modern society, while also placing a responsibility on nations to ensure that scientific advancement delivers tangible benefits to humanity.

“Over the past year, global attention has focused not only on scientific discoveries, but also on the responsibility that accompanies scientific development,” the Minister said.

Mr Iddrisu pointed out that major disparities still exist in global participation in frontier science, revealing that approximately 145 countries are yet to develop national quantum strategies. He said this gap must be addressed to promote inclusivity and ensure that developing countries, particularly in Africa, are not left behind in the quantum revolution.

Highlighting the real-world relevance of quantum technologies, the Education Minister cited their applications in agriculture, food systems, climate forecasting, soil and water monitoring, as well as national security. According to him, these technologies have the potential to transform productivity, resilience and decision-making across key sectors.

“For countries like Ghana, where agriculture remains the backbone of livelihoods, quantum science is not optional; it is significant and paramount,” he stressed.

Mr Iddrisu also said hosting the IYQ2025 closing ceremony under the Global Scientific Dialogue platform reinforces Africa’s place in the future of frontier science. He added that African talent, ideas and intellectual contributions must be fully recognised and integrated into global scientific progress.

The Minister further underscored the importance of education as the most powerful driver of scientific growth, noting that sustained investment in teachers, researchers and young people will determine how effectively quantum science can be harnessed to advance Africa’s development and contribute meaningfully to global innovation.
