King Charles to Welcome Nigeria’s President for First UK State Visit

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his wife, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, on an official state visit to the United Kingdom. This will be the first Nigerian state visit to the UK in 37 years.

Buckingham Palace announced that the visit will take place at Windsor Castle from 18 to 19 March. State visits are special diplomatic events where royal tradition and ceremony are used to strengthen relationships between countries.

The last time a Nigerian leader made a state visit to the UK was in 1989. At that time, Nigeria was ruled by General Ibrahim Babangida, who visited the late Queen Elizabeth II for four days.

Although this is President Tinubu’s first state visit to the UK, he has already met King Charles since becoming president in 2023. He and his wife visited Buckingham Palace in September 2024. They also met the King during the COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

A state visit is different from a normal visit. It includes formal ceremonies such as carriage processions and a grand state banquet. These events show how important the visiting country is to the UK.

The visit comes at a time when relations between Nigeria and the UK are improving. Trade between the two countries is now worth more than £8 billion a year, according to UK government figures. This makes Nigeria one of Britain’s most important partners in Africa.

In 2024, the UK and Nigeria also signed a new trade and investment agreement. The goal is to create more business opportunities and strengthen economic ties.

The full programme for the March visit has not yet been announced. However, state visits usually include meetings between leaders, official dinners, and public ceremonies.

King Charles has a long connection with Nigeria, which is a member of the Commonwealth. He has said he enjoys Nigerian culture, including Pidgin English and Afrobeats music.

Before becoming King, he visited Nigeria four times as Prince of Wales, in 1990, 1999, 2006, and 2018. Queen Camilla joined him on the 2018 trip.

In 2023, the King’s Trust International, formerly known as the Prince’s Trust, officially launched in Nigeria. The organisation runs programmes to help young people find jobs and start businesses.

The upcoming visit is expected to strengthen ties between the two countries and show the importance of Nigeria to the UK on the global stage.
