Highlife and Afrobeat Pioneer Ebo Taylor Dies at 90

Ebo Taylor, the legendary Ghanaian musician whose career helped shape the foundations of modern African music, has died at the age of 90.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential composers and bandleaders, Taylor’s work left an indelible mark on highlife, Afrobeat, jazz and funk.
Born Deroy Taylor in 1936 in Cape Coast, Ebo Taylor’s musical journey began in the late 1950s. He rose to prominence performing with some of Ghana’s most celebrated highlife ensembles, including the Stargazers and the Broadway Dance Band, before forming his own groups and emerging as a defining voice in West African music.
Taylor earned international acclaim for his innovative fusion of traditional Ghanaian rhythms with global musical influences. His distinctive guitar style, complex arrangements and fearless experimentation set him apart and made him a respected collaborator. His association with Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti further cemented his place in African music history, while his influence later extended to generations of musicians across Europe, North America and beyond.
Over a career spanning nearly seven decades, Taylor released a series of landmark recordings celebrated for their deep grooves, rich melodies and cross-genre appeal. In 2025, he marked a personal milestone with EboFest, a celebratory concert held at the Alliance Française in Accra to commemorate his 90th birthday.
