Couples Must Plan Weddings within Their Means – Financial Planner

Financial Planner Benjamin Nathan Otchere has advised couples to prioritise financial discipline and long-term stability over extravagant wedding ceremonies, stressing that marriage offers many opportunities to create meaningful memories beyond the wedding day.
Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed 101.9, Mr. Otchere urged couples who intend to live together to understand that a wedding, while important, should not become a financial burden or the single defining moment of their relationship.
“If you are a couple and you love each other and decide to live together, you should understand that the wedding is not the only memorable day you can create. Here are many other moments in life that matter just as much,” he said.
He encouraged couples to focus on what they can realistically control financially, rather than stretching themselves in pursuit of an ideal ceremony. According to him, even when external support is available, couples should ensure that their own contribution to the wedding remains within their means.
“You always have to concentrate on the things you can control rather than the things you cannot control. What you have and what you can manage should guide the kind of wedding you plan,” he said.
The Financial Planner also explained that couples who desire unique experiences such as a beach wedding should first assess whether they can personally afford the associated costs. He advised couples to engage service providers directly, negotiate prices, and explore connections that could help reduce expenses.
“If you want a beach wedding, consult the right people and make sure the pricing is something you and your spouse can fund. If you know someone who can help negotiate or speak on your behalf, take advantage of that to bring costs down,” he said.
Mr. Otchere emphasised that it is possible to host a beautiful and memorable wedding without overspending, adding that careful planning and honest budgeting are key.
He reminded couples that financial prudence at the start of marriage lays a stronger foundation for the future, allowing them to build lasting memories without the stress of avoidable debt.
