The total value of mobile money transactions in Ghana surged to a record GH¢4.5 trillion in 2025, underscoring the rapid expansion of digital payments and the deepening role of mobile money in the country’s financial ecosystem.
The figure was captured in the Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) on January 29, 2026. The data points to strong month-on-month growth throughout the year, with particularly sharp acceleration in the final quarter of 2025.
According to the central bank’s data, mobile money transaction values rose steadily toward the end of the year. In September 2025, total transaction value stood at GH¢406.9 billion. This increased further to GH¢434.7 billion in October before easing slightly to GH¢420 billion in November 2025. Activity rebounded strongly in December, with transaction values jumping to GH¢518 billion, the highest monthly figure recorded in the year.
The GH¢4.5 trillion figure represents the cumulative value of transactions reported by telecom operators engaged in mobile money services to the Bank of Ghana, covering the period from January to December 2025.
Year-on-Year Performance
The latest data highlights a remarkable expansion in mobile money usage over the past four years. In 2022, the total value of mobile money transactions stood at GH¢1 trillion. This nearly doubled to GH¢1.9 trillion in 2023, before rising further to GH¢3 trillion in 2024.
Provisional estimates from the Bank of Ghana now place the 2025 figure at GH¢4.5 trillion, reflecting both increased transaction volumes and higher average transaction values as mobile money becomes more deeply embedded in everyday economic activity.
Drivers of Growth
Industry players attribute the strong growth in mobile money transactions to a combination of changing consumer behaviour, improved digital infrastructure, and sustained policy efforts to promote cashless payments.
More individuals and businesses are increasingly turning to mobile money for everyday transactions, including payments for goods and services, bill settlements, transfers, and merchant transactions. At the same time, the Bank of Ghana, in collaboration with commercial banks and payment service providers, has intensified efforts to promote a cash-lite economy.
In addition, a growing number of institutions and businesses now accept mobile money as a primary mode of payment, reducing reliance on cash and improving transaction convenience. Analysts note that these developments, alongside greater trust in digital platforms, have significantly boosted overall transaction values.
Total Industry Performance
Beyond transaction values, broader industry indicators also point to strong momentum in the mobile money sector. Data from the Bank of Ghana shows that the total number of mobile money transactions reached 982 million in December 2025 alone.
Active mobile money accounts stood at 26.7 million at the end of December 2025, reflecting widespread adoption across different segments of the population. Meanwhile, the number of active mobile money agents was pegged at about 960,000 as of December 2025, highlighting the extensive nationwide agent network supporting digital financial services.
The sustained growth in mobile money activity reinforces its central role in Ghana’s payments system, financial inclusion agenda, and broader digital transformation, positioning the sector as a key pillar of economic activity going into 2026.
