“There Is No One Better Than Him” – Arteta Defends Under-Fire Arsenal Captain
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has thrown his full support behind club captain Martin Ødegaard amid growing criticism from sections of the fanbase over his recent performances.
Ødegaard came under intense scrutiny following Arsenal’s 3–2 defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium, with some supporters questioning his leadership and calling for the captain’s armband to be handed to midfielder Declan Rice. Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams has also publicly suggested a change in captaincy.
However, speaking at a press conference ahead of Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League group-stage encounter against Kazakhstan side Kairat on Wednesday, January 28, Arteta firmly dismissed the criticism and backed Ødegaard as the right man to lead the team.
“Martin is a fantastic guy around the changing room. He’s well liked and respected. Discipline and standards, he’s also one of the people who walks the walk. The armband couldn’t sit on a better person than him,” Arteta said.
Despite the domestic setback, Arsenal have enjoyed a strong Champions League campaign, topping the group standings with seven wins from seven matches and already securing qualification to the Round of 16 ahead of the final group fixture.
