AI Summit Launches Innovation Challenge to Tackle National Problems with Local Data

The Ghana AI Summit and Awards, in partnership with Knowledge Innovations, the Ghana AI Research Network (GAIN), and other collaborators, have announced the launch of the Ghana AI Innovation Challenge an action-oriented research competition aimed at solving national development challenges using homegrown data.
The initiative invites data scientists, technologists, researchers, and innovators to develop artificial intelligence-powered solutions built on Ghanaian datasets across priority sectors including agriculture, healthcare, financial inclusion, public services and education. The Ghana AI Summit and Awards is scheduled to take place from July 29 to 30, 2026, in Accra.
Designed as a structured, multi-phase competition, the challenge will run in three stages: initial submissions, technical reviews and refinements and live pitching sessions during the Summit. Entries will be assessed based on relevance and impact (30%), technical soundness (25%), innovation (20%), scalability (15%), and presentation quality (10%).
Organised as part of the broader Ghana AI Summit ecosystem, the initiative seeks to harness collective innovation, strengthen collaboration between technologists and domain experts, generate actionable insights and demonstrate the practical value of artificial intelligence in addressing Ghanaian problems.
Expressing enthusiasm about the partnership, Dr. Henry Nunoo-Mensah, Network Lead of GAIN, said the challenge presents a valuable opportunity for academia and industry to work together.
“We are excited to be working with the Ghana AI Summit to make this event happen, as it creates a practical pathway for academic research to connect with industry in solving critical societal challenges using the power of AI,” he noted.
Dr. Kwami Ahiabenu, Event organiser reiterated the Summit’s broader vision. “We are committed to making Ghana’s AI ecosystem more vibrant while ensuring that innovation directly serves the needs of society. This AI Innovation Challenge brings that vision to life,” he said.
Submissions for the competition are now open through the official challenge portal. Selected top solutions will be showcased at the Summit, with opportunities for funding, partnerships, and real-world deployment.
