UN Human Rights Chief Confronts Harrowing Testimonies in Sudan

UN Human Rights Chief Confronts Harrowing Testimonies in Sudan, as High Commissioner Volker Türk embarks on his first official visit to the country since November 2022. Touring camps and communities devastated by conflict, Türk met families displaced by fighting between rival military factions that continues to ravage Sudan, particularly in Darfur and Kordofan, where millions have been forced from their homes.
Speaking during the visit, Türk said he was deeply shaken by the accounts of survivors, especially women and girls who have endured sexual violence. He described meeting nine women who shared what he called “horrific stories,” noting that he had rarely encountered individuals so profoundly traumatized.
According to Türk, survivors recounted being subjected to gang rape in the Darfur city of El Fasher as they attempted to flee violence. Many said male relatives—including brothers and sons—were taken away and killed in front of them. These testimonies, he stressed, reveal the systematic use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has documented widespread abuses since the conflict began. Reports include rape, gang rape, abduction, and sexual slavery, often carried out along ethnic lines or based on perceived affiliation with opposing forces. Human rights monitors warn that such crimes are part of a deliberate strategy to terrorize communities and deepen divisions.
The humanitarian toll is staggering. Millions remain displaced inside Sudan, while thousands more have fled into neighboring countries. Camps are overcrowded, with limited access to food, water, and medical care. Aid agencies caution that conditions are worsening as violence spreads and humanitarian corridors remain blocked.
Türk’s visit is intended to shine a spotlight on the crisis and press for accountability. He emphasized the urgent need to protect civilians, deliver justice for survivors, and hold perpetrators of atrocities to account. “These stories must not be ignored,” he said, urging the international community to stand with Sudanese victims and demand an end to impunity.
Sudan’s conflict shows no sign of easing, with rival military forces locked in a struggle for control. For survivors, the scars of violence remain raw, and for the UN, the challenge is to ensure their voices are heard amid the chaos.
