South African Joins Search for Politician Swept Away in Mozambique Floods

South Africa has dispatched a rescue team to neighbouring Mozambique to assist in the search for a local politician swept away by floodwaters. The mission underscores the growing regional impact of weeks of torrential rains that have devastated communities across southern Africa.

Officials confirmed that Andile Mngwevu, a councillor from the Ekurhuleni municipality east of Johannesburg, was among five people traveling in Gaza province when their vehicle was caught in rising floodwaters. Only one passenger has been accounted for, while the status and whereabouts of the remaining occupants remain unconfirmed. The municipality said it is working closely with Mozambican authorities to coordinate rescue efforts.

Flooding has wreaked havoc across both countries, prompting Mozambican President Daniel Chapo to cancel his planned trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that two helicopters had been deployed to Mozambique to support search and rescue operations “for a number of days until their situation subsides.”

Weeks of heavy rainfall have already claimed more than 100 lives in Mozambique, damaging infrastructure and displacing thousands. Roads, bridges, and homes have been washed away, leaving communities isolated and in urgent need of assistance. Aid agencies warn that the humanitarian toll is likely to rise as the rainy season intensifies.

Central and northern Mozambique have now entered their annual cyclone season, with forecasts predicting further heavy downpours across large parts of the country. Authorities fear that additional flooding could worsen the crisis, complicating rescue operations and stretching already limited resources.

For South Africa, the tragedy has struck close to home. Mngwevu’s disappearance has drawn attention to the dangers faced by officials and citizens alike in flood prone regions. Local leaders in Ekurhuleni expressed solidarity with Mngwevu’s family and pledged continued support for the search.

Regional cooperation has become vital as both countries confront the escalating disaster. South Africa’s assistance highlights the importance of cross border collaboration in responding to extreme weather events that do not respect national boundaries.

As rescue teams continue their search in Mozambique’s flood hit Gaza province, the fate of Mngwevu and his fellow passengers remains uncertain. For communities across southern Africa, the floods are a stark reminder of the growing threat posed by climate change and the urgent need for preparedness in the face of increasingly severe weather.
