Mahama Demands Justice in Teacher Assault Case

President John Mahama has strongly condemned recent attacks on teachers across Ghana, calling for justice in a high-profile case involving students of Kade Senior High School.
Speaking at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Delegates Conference, the President expressed concern over a viral video from October 2025 that showed students assaulting a mathematics teacher after he reportedly prevented them from cheating during an examination.
President Mahama said he was deeply disappointed that despite a police report, the students involved faced no formal disciplinary action. Instead, their parents reached an out-of-court settlement with the teacher. He questioned the precedent set by treating what he described as a clear criminal act as a private matter.
“I saw the video of the Maths teacher being beaten because he refused to allow our students to cheat, and they had a sense of entitlement,” he said. “The unfortunate thing is that the matter went to the police station… and they said they settled the matter amicably. How is that? This is assault. It is criminal.”
The President criticized the resolution, arguing that financial compensation alone was insufficient to ensure justice or deter future violence against teachers. He insisted that the students should have been subjected to the legal process.
“But when we inquired, the police also said the teacher was compensated, so he didn’t want to press charges anymore. At least the children should have been booked, they should have been taken through the legal process,” Mahama asserted. “At least if nothing at all, they should have been bonded to be of good behavior for a period of time, and then we will believe that justice has been done.”
Concluding his remarks, President Mahama pledged his full support to teachers, stressing that assaults on educators will not be tolerated. “As for assault on teachers, I am with you 100%, we will deal with it,” he declared.
His comments have reignited debate over how cases of violence in schools are handled and the need for stronger measures to protect teachers nationwide.
