La Nkwantanang–Madina Assembly Steps Up Enforcement at Madina Zongo Junction

The La Nkwantanang–Madina Municipal Assembly has intensified enforcement measures at the Madina Zongo Junction following the deaths of about 60 pedestrians through vehicular knockdowns over the past seven years.
The move forms part of renewed efforts to curb road accidents and improve pedestrian safety along the busy stretch, which has long been identified as a high-risk zone due to heavy vehicular traffic and frequent human movement.
As part of the intervention, the Assembly has installed mesh wiring along sections of the road to restrict illegal crossings and channel pedestrians toward the designated footbridge. In addition, a 100-member joint task force comprising officers of the Assembly and the Ghana Police Service has been deployed to enforce compliance and ensure public safety.
According to the Assembly, investigations into the repeated accidents revealed that a significant number of fatalities occurred as a result of pedestrians failing to use the footbridge provided at the location. Many victims were reportedly knocked down while attempting to cross the highway directly, despite the availability of a safer alternative.
Speaking to ZED NEWS, officials explained that the intensified enforcement is aimed at protecting lives and instilling discipline among road users, particularly pedestrians who continue to disregard safety measures.
Reactions from residents and commuters have been mixed. Some pedestrians acknowledged that the footbridge remains the safest option but complained that it is often overcrowded, especially during peak hours, making it inconvenient to use. Others also cited the length of the bridge and the time it takes to cross as reasons people avoid it.
However, several residents welcomed the Assembly’s intervention, describing it as a necessary step to curb the rising number of fatalities at the junction. They noted that while the measures may be inconvenient for some, they are essential for saving lives.
Many pedestrians also indicated that they are now prepared to use the footbridge consistently, following the heightened enforcement and awareness, in order to ensure their safety and prevent further loss of life at the busy Madina Zongo Junction.
