Russian General Killed in Moscow Car Bomb

A senior Russian military officer has been killed in a car bomb attack in southern Moscow, raising fresh security concerns inside Russia and adding to tensions with Ukraine.
The explosion happened early Monday morning, around 7 a.m., in a parking area in the southern part of the Russian capital. According to Russian media reports, a bomb planted under the officer’s car exploded as he approached or entered the vehicle.
Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed that the victim was Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, the head of the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. A criminal investigation has been opened into the killing.
Speaking to the media, the spokesperson for the Investigative Committee, Svetlana Petrenko, said investigators are looking at several possible explanations for the attack. She added that one key line of investigation is that Ukrainian intelligence services may have planned and carried out the bombing.
The Russian Defence Ministry said General Sarvarov was an experienced military officer. He had previously fought in the war in Chechnya and also took part in Russia’s military operations in Syria. His role involved overseeing training and operational planning within the armed forces.
Although Ukrainian officials have not commented on this specific incident, Ukraine has previously claimed responsibility for similar attacks. Last December, Ukraine said it was behind the killing of a senior Russian military officer in a separate bombing. In April this year, another high-ranking Russian official was also killed when a car bomb exploded outside his apartment in Moscow.
The Kremlin has repeatedly accused Ukraine of being responsible for bombings, sabotage, and attacks across Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine. Russian authorities say such actions are part of a wider campaign to target military and security officials inside the country.
Ukraine, on the other hand, has argued that attacks on Russian military figures are linked to the ongoing conflict and Russia’s invasion, which began in February 2022.
The latest killing is likely to increase security measures around senior Russian officials and military installations. It also highlights how the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is increasingly spilling beyond the battlefield and into major cities.
Investigations into the bombing are ongoing, and Russian authorities say they will release more information as details emerge.
