Ghana, Canada Explore Deeper Trade Ties
Ghana and Canada are exploring expanded trade and investment cooperation, with aviation emerging as a strategic priority following indications of interest by Air Canada to operate in Ghana.
The discussions took place during a courtesy call by the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Myriam Montrat, on the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare.
Both sides underscored the importance of improved air connectivity in reducing trade costs, boosting tourism, and strengthening commercial and people-to-people relations between the two countries.
High Commissioner Montrat said Air Canada’s interest signals growing economic engagement with Ghana and the wider West African sub-region.
She noted that enhanced air links would support increased trade and investment flows, particularly as Ghana continues to position itself as a regional business and logistics hub.
Beyond aviation, the talks focused on diversifying bilateral trade, expanding market access for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and scaling up agribusiness exports. Montrat highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a key platform through which Canadian firms operating in Ghana could gain access to wider African markets.
She also called for sustained efforts to address regulatory and investment bottlenecks, stressing that an improved business environment would be critical to attracting more Canadian companies to Ghana.
