President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to draw enduring lessons from the birth of Jesus Christ, urging the nation to embrace humility, generosity and love as guiding principles for national development.
Speaking at the 2025 Presidential Nine Lessons and Carols service, President Mahama said the story of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem offers timeless truths that remain relevant to Ghana’s national life today, just as they were centuries ago.
“The story of Christ’s birth teaches us enduring truths that from humility can emerge greatness, that in giving we are enriched, and that in loving one another we discover the highest expression of our own humanity,” he said.
He urged citizens to carry the spirit of Christmas beyond the festive season and into the year ahead, choosing unity over division, service over self-interest, and hope over despair.
According to him, such values are essential to strengthening the bonds that hold the nation together and reaffirming Ghana’s collective commitment to building a peaceful, just and prosperous country for both present and future generations.
President Mahama also called on Ghanaians to remain grateful to God, citing the biblical exhortation in Thessalonians to “give thanks to God in all things.”
“As a nation, we have a lot to be grateful to God for. Ghana continues to enjoy peace despite instability in the subregion,” he said.
He highlighted the country’s ability to coexist peacefully amid ethnic and religious diversity, as well as the guidance God has provided in sustaining a relatively stable and prosperous economy.
However, the President acknowledged the nation’s recent moments of adversity, particularly the tragic loss of eight colleagues in the August 7 helicopter crash.
He offered prayers for the departed, asking God to grant them eternal rest and to comfort their families and loved ones.
“May God grant them peaceful repose in His bosom and grant their families and loved ones divine comfort,” President Mahama said.
The annual Nine Lessons and Carols service brings together national leaders, clergy and members of the public to reflect on the Christmas story and its relevance to Ghana’s moral and civic life.
