BoG Pledges to Consolidate Regulatory Gains

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, has reaffirmed the central bank’s commitment to consolidating recent regulatory and monetary sector gains, while signalling the rollout of new reforms aimed at strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of Ghana’s banking industry.

Dr. Asiama gave the assurance during an engagement with Managing Directors of commercial banks, held shortly after the latest Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting. The meeting, he explained, forms part of the BoG’s broader strategy to deepen collaboration with industry stakeholders as it works to safeguard financial stability and modernise the financial sector.

According to the Governor, Ghana’s banking system has made notable progress in recent years, particularly in stabilising the monetary environment and restoring confidence following periods of stress. He stressed that the central bank is determined to protect these gains through prudent regulation, enhanced supervision and well-sequenced reforms.

“The Bank of Ghana will remain a firm, fair, and transparent partner, supportive where necessary and uncompromising where stability is at risk. I am confident that with your continued partnership, we will deliver a stronger, more modern, and more resilient financial system, one capable of supporting Ghana’s transformation in the years ahead,” Dr. Asiama said.

He indicated that upcoming reforms will place strong emphasis on risk management, corporate governance, and capital adequacy, ensuring that banks are sufficiently robust to withstand shocks while supporting economic expansion. According to him, these reforms will also take into account emerging risks linked to digital finance, cyber security and evolving global regulatory standards.

Dr. Asiama noted that while the BoG remains committed to promoting innovation and financial inclusion, such progress must be anchored in strong safeguards to prevent systemic vulnerabilities. Regulatory measures, he said, will therefore be carefully calibrated to strike a balance between innovation and stability.

The Governor also urged commercial banks to align their business strategies with Ghana’s broader national development agenda. He encouraged banks to deepen support for productive sectors of the economy, particularly agriculture, manufacturing and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are critical to job creation and inclusive growth.

According to him, a banking sector that actively supports real sector activity is essential for sustaining economic recovery and long-term development.

Managing Directors of the commercial banks present at the meeting welcomed the Governor’s assurances and reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the central bank. They expressed support for continued regulatory engagement and policy clarity, which they said are vital for planning, investment and confidence in the financial system.

The BoG’s renewed push for reforms comes at a critical time as Ghana continues efforts to restore macroeconomic stability, strengthen investor confidence and reinforce trust in the financial sector following recent economic challenges. The central bank believes that sustained collaboration with industry players will be key to delivering a sound, resilient and forward-looking banking system capable of supporting Ghana’s economic transformation.
