PSG Ordered to Pay Mbappé €60m in Unpaid Wages and Bonuses

Paris Saint-Germain have been ordered by a French court to pay former striker Kylian Mbappé €60 million (£52.5m) in unpaid salary and bonuses, bringing a major legal dispute between the club and its former star to a partial close.
Mbappé had initially sought €263 million (£231.5m) from PSG when the case reached a Paris labour court in November, while the French champions counter-sued the France captain for €240 million (£211m).
The 26-year-old Real Madrid forward claimed the nine-figure sum as damages linked to a contract dispute and alleged ill-treatment by the club. His claim included €55 million (£46.3m) in unpaid wages.
However, the court awarded him a reduced amount, ruling that PSG failed to pay three months of his salary between April and June 2024, as well as an ethics bonus and a signing-on bonus stipulated in his contract.
“We are satisfied with this ruling. This is what you would expect when salaries go unpaid,” Mbappé’s lawyer, Frédérique Cassereau, said following the decision.
PSG had argued that Mbappé owed the club compensation following the collapse of a proposed €300 million transfer to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in 2023. The forward ultimately joined Spanish giants Real Madrid on a free transfer the following summer.
In a statement, Mbappé’s legal team said the ruling reaffirmed basic legal principles.
“This judgement confirms that commitments entered into must be honoured. It restores a simple truth: even in the professional football industry, labour law applies to everyone,” the statement said.
“Mr Mbappé, for his part, scrupulously respected his sporting and contractual obligations for seven years, right up to the final day.”
The dispute, which spanned more than two years, was triggered by Mbappé’s decision not to join the Saudi Pro League and his refusal to sign a contract extension at PSG. The player has maintained that he was sidelined as a result.
He was excluded from PSG’s pre-season tour of Asia and missed the club’s opening match of the 2023-24 season before later being reinstated.
PSG claimed the decision followed Mbappé’s agreement to waive parts of his end-of-contract payments to protect the club’s financial position, a claim his representatives dismissed as “fantasy” during the November hearing.
The club also accused Mbappé of acting “disloyally” by allegedly concealing his decision not to extend his contract for nearly 11 months between July 2022 and June 2023, stating that the move caused PSG “significant damages,”
Mbappé was at PSG from 2017 to 2024, initially on loan from Monaco before completing a permanent move. During his time in Paris, he won 15 trophies and became the club’s all-time leading scorer, netting 256 goals in 308 appearances, including 44 goals in 48 matches in his final season.
