Carrefour Group to Take Over Shoprite Stores in Ghana

French retail giant Carrefour Group is set to take over Shoprite’s franchise operations in Ghana through a new partnership with distributor Brands For All, following the acquisition of seven Shoprite hypermarkets in November 2025.
Under the agreement, the existing Shoprite stores will be rebranded as Carrefour outlets, with the first openings expected by April 2026. The move forms part of Carrefour’s broader expansion strategy across Africa, according to a press release issued on Monday, December 15, 2025.
The development follows Shoprite’s decision to exit the Ghanaian market as it refocuses on its home market in South Africa.
Brands For All, which acquired the seven Shoprite hypermarkets in November, is an established distributor and franchise partner for international retail brands including Decathlon and Yves Rocher across Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
In its announcement, Carrefour said the partnership will see the rollout of its brand, expertise and product offerings in Ghana. Under the agreement, Carrefour International will support Brands For All in the takeover and transformation of the entire Shoprite Ghana network, alongside the implementation of an ambitious expansion plan.
“The partnership will enable the rapid conversion of the seven existing hypermarkets under the Carrefour banner, while laying the foundation for future growth in the Ghanaian market,” the statement said.
Carrefour International’s Executive Director, Patrick Lasfargues, disclosed that the retailer plans to open five additional outlets in Ghana by 2028.
The press release described the agreement as a testament to the strength and dynamism of Carrefour’s franchise-led growth model, noting that it aligns with the group’s 2026 strategic plan to expand into 10 new countries through franchising.
“We are delighted to initiate this collaboration with a leading retail player in Ghana. Beyond the rapid transformation of the seven Shoprite Ghana hypermarkets, the Brands For All and Carrefour International teams are already working hand in hand on the future growth of our activities in the country. By 2028, we project the opening of five additional stores,” Mr Lasfargues said.
The Carrefour Group ranks among the world’s leading food retailers. Its global franchise operations are overseen by Carrefour International Partnership, which manages franchised partners across more than 30 countries, operating a network of over 3,000 stores worldwide.
In 2024, Carrefour recorded sales of €94.6 billion. The group’s integrated retail network employs over 300,000 people, supporting its vision of leading the global food transition by providing quality food that is accessible everywhere and offered at affordable prices. Overall, more than 500,000 people work under the Carrefour banner across the world.
