Ghana National Theatre Set for Major Renovation to Modernize Cultural Landmark

The Ghana National Theatre is set to undergo extensive renovation aimed at transforming the iconic cultural institution into a modern facility that aligns with contemporary production standards and offers world-class creative experiences.

Having served as a hub for Ghana’s performing arts for over three decades, the theatre is currently facing infrastructural and technical challenges that have affected the efficiency of certain systems and operations. The planned refurbishment is expected to address these issues and restore the theatre to its original prominence.

A delegation from the Chinese government recently visited the National Theatre alongside the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, ministry directors, and architects to assess the facility and discuss the scope of the renovation.

Henry Herbert Malm, Executive Director of the National Theatre, described the renovation as a crucial step toward enhancing the theatre’s capacity to host high-quality productions. He noted that the upgrades would modernize technical equipment, improve safety standards, and provide a more comfortable environment for performers, staff, and audiences. “This renovation reflects our commitment to staying relevant in a rapidly evolving creative industry,” he said.

Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie expressed excitement that the long-standing refurbishment plans were finally coming to fruition. She praised China’s support for the project, highlighting that the agreement followed President John Dramani Mahama’s recent visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. She emphasized that the facelift would create opportunities for artists to showcase and further develop their talents while strengthening the theatre’s role in domestic and international cultural collaboration.

Mr Li Yaohong, leader of the Chinese delegation, stated that Ghana’s cultural heritage and its significance in West Africa motivated China to build the National Theatre initially and now support its refurbishment. China has committed $30 million (approximately ¥200 million) to fund the National Theatre renovation alongside an off-road market project.

The refurbishment will prioritize key areas including the halls and stages, storage spaces, air-conditioning systems, safety installations such as fencing and CCTV, modern firefighting equipment, and a general facelift of the compound.

Built under an agreement signed in 1989 and completed in 1992, the National Theatre currently hosts the National Dance Company, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the National Drama Company, continuing its mission as a cornerstone of Ghana’s performing arts.
