Prez Mahama Unveils Police Vehicle Upgrade

President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a major effort to strengthen the operational capacity of the Ghana Police Service, handing over 40 armoured vehicles to the force on Thursday, December 4. The initiative forms part of a broader program aimed at modernizing policing nationwide.
At the ceremony, President Mahama emphasized that the 40 vehicles are only the first phase of the program. He announced that an additional 10 covert operational vehicles and two tow trucks will soon be deployed to enhance mobility and ensure officers can respond swiftly to incidents across all regions. “These 40 vehicles are just the initial batch. By the end of the month, you will receive two tow trucks for retrieving immobilised vehicles and 10 covert operational vehicles to strengthen field operations,” he stated.
The President also revealed plans to equip every police district with standard pickup trucks for routine patrol duties, aimed at improving response times and visibility in communities. He highlighted the importance of integrating modern technology into policing, including training a specialized detachment to operate drones for urban surveillance and intelligence gathering.
“These measures form part of a sustained investment in security infrastructure, reflecting the government’s commitment to equipping officers with the tools necessary to perform their duties effectively,” President Mahama added.
The event was attended by Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak and numerous senior police officers, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies.
Addressing the gathering, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu assured that the vehicles would be strategically deployed and properly maintained to achieve their intended objectives. He commended the government for the intervention, noting that the new assets would significantly enhance the Service’s ability to respond to emergencies, secure communities, and maintain law and order.
IGP Yohunu urged officers to use the vehicles responsibly while continuing their mission to protect life and property across the country.
