Mobile Money Transactions Hit GH¢3.6 Trillion in First Ten Months of 2025

The total value of mobile money transactions in Ghana surged to GH¢3.6 trillion in the first ten months of 2025, underscoring the rapid growth and adoption of digital payment systems across the country. The data, released by the Bank of Ghana following the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting last week, reflects the cumulative transactions reported by telecom operators between January and October 2025.
Month-on-month figures reveal continued expansion in usage. September alone recorded GH¢406 billion in transactions, which rose further to GH¢436 billion in October, indicating a steady upward trajectory in both the volume and value of mobile money activity.
When compared with previous years, the growth is particularly striking. For the same period in 2024, total mobile money transactions stood at GH¢2.368 trillion, while in 2023, the figure was GH¢1.367 trillion. These numbers illustrate the increasing reliance on mobile money platforms as a preferred method of payment for both individuals and businesses. Analysts attribute the surge to multiple factors, including greater acceptance of mobile money for goods and services, government initiatives to promote a cashless economy, and partnerships between banks and telecom companies to encourage digital financial inclusion.
The Bank of Ghana’s report also provides insights into sector participation. As of October 2025, there were 79.1 million registered mobile money accounts, of which 25.3 million were active. The sector is supported by approximately 949,000 registered agents nationwide, facilitating access to financial services even in remote areas.
In total, there were 893 million mobile money transactions from January to October 2025. The report highlights interoperability as a key driver of convenience and efficiency, with GH¢40 billion transferred across different mobile money platforms within the same period. This interoperability allows customers to send and receive funds seamlessly between networks, further strengthening confidence in digital payments.
Industry experts have emphasized that the consistent growth in mobile money activity reflects both technological adoption and evolving consumer behavior. As more institutions integrate mobile money payment systems, and as financial literacy campaigns continue to educate users on digital finance, Ghana’s mobile money sector is poised to expand even further in 2026.
The record GH¢3.6 trillion in transaction value reinforces the role of mobile money as a critical component of Ghana’s financial ecosystem, supporting government efforts to deepen financial inclusion, reduce cash dependency, and enhance the efficiency of the payments landscape.
