December Begins with Modest Gains at GSE Amid Strong Year-to-Date Performance

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) opened the final month of 2025 with a measured but encouraging rise, extending what has already been one of the most impressive years for the local bourse in recent history. The market’s performance on Monday, December 1, 2025, reinforced the view that investor sentiment remains strong despite broader economic headwinds.
At the close of trading, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) inched up to 8,610.70 points, continuing its upward trajectory. The Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI), which tracks the performance of listed financial institutions, also climbed to 4,457.71 points, reflecting persistent interest in the banking and finance sector.
On a year-to-date basis, the market’s performance has been exceptional. The GSE-CI has posted a significant 76.14% growth, while the GSE-FSI has surged 87.24%, underscoring the strong rebound in financial stocks and renewed investor appetite for equities. Market analysts say the figures point to growing confidence in corporate earnings, improved macroeconomic conditions, and a broader recovery in business activity.
Trading activity on the first day of December was moderate but healthy. More than 1.26 million shares were traded, with transactions valued at GH¢1.42 million. The market capitalization held firm at GH¢166.5 billion, reflecting the sustained momentum that has characterised the stock market throughout 2025.
Among the notable performers of the day was Cal Bank PLC, which continues to draw significant investor interest. The bank’s stock gained GH¢0.01 to close at GH¢0.41, with over 1 million shares traded, making it the most actively traded equity of the session. Market watchers attribute the strong demand to improving financial sector fundamentals and renewed confidence in banking stocks following regulatory reforms and improved earnings disclosures.
In contrast, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana PLC recorded a minor decline, slipping to GH¢40.37 after trading just under 5,000 shares. Despite the dip, interest in the energy sector remained steady as investors continued to monitor fuel price trends, energy demand, and corporate performance in the downstream petroleum market.
Overall, the cautious uptick in December’s opening session signals a continuation of the stock market’s strong run in 2025. Investors appear to be strategising ahead of the year-end close, with financial and energy stocks dominating market activity. Analysts say the positive start to December supports expectations of a stable finish to the year and potentially sets the tone for early 2026, provided market fundamentals remain supportive and economic recovery stays on track.
As Ghana moves deeper into the festive season, the GSE’s resilience offers a bright spot in the broader economic landscape, reaffirming its role as a key driver of investment and wealth creation.
