Security Analyst Urges Banks to Prioritise Continuous Cybersecurity Training

By Nii Trebi Hammond

Security Analyst Alex Ansah has urged banks in Ghana to prioritise continuous cybersecurity training for their staff as the financial sector faces a sharp rise in cyber-related attacks.

Mr. Ansah’s call comes against the backdrop of new data showing a worrying surge in cybercrime. Losses increased from GH¢23.3 million in 2024 to GH¢14.9 million in the first half of 2025, before climbing to GH¢19 million by the third quarter. This represents a 17 per cent year-on-year growth, while cyber incidents surged by 52 per cent in the first half of 2025 alone, a trend analysts warn highlights the growing sophistication and speed of cyber threats.

Speaking on the Business Breakfast show on Zed FM, Mr. Ansah said banks must complement their investments in technology with equal investment in human capacity. According to him, poor staff training often creates vulnerabilities that expose institutions to social engineering and other forms of cyberattacks.

He also stressed the need for continuous and updated training, rather than one-time orientations, to ensure staff remain alert to evolving cyber risks.

Mr. Ansah reiterated that strengthening human behaviour and awareness is essential to building a resilient cybersecurity culture across the banking sector.
