Interior Ministry Launches Amnesty to Curb Rising Gun Violence

The Ministry of the Interior has announced a six-week nationwide amnesty for individuals holding unregistered firearms, urging them to voluntarily submit their weapons or face tough penalties.

Effective December 1, 2025, the exercise will run until January 15, 2026, as part of renewed efforts to stem the spread of illicit arms and tackle the surge in gun-related incidents across the country. The initiative provides a safe window for citizens to hand over unregistered or illegally owned firearms without the risk of prosecution.

Launching the Gun Amnesty Initiative, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak cautioned that anyone found in possession of illicit weapons after the deadline will face severe sanctions. He described the amnesty as a critical measure toward strengthening public safety and protecting communities.

The Minister further announced a temporary ban on the use of firearms during traditional festivities throughout the amnesty period. The move seeks to curb celebratory gunfire, reduce injuries, and safeguard lives nationwide.
