Market Capitalisation Hits GH¢165.5bn as GSE Ends Week on Strong Momentum

Ghana’s stock market closed last week on a firm footing, with investors recording broad-based gains across several sectors as market capitalisation climbed to GH¢165.5 billion, nearly GH¢3 billion higher than the previous week. The upbeat performance reflected sustained investor confidence and continued momentum across the equities market.
By close of trading on Friday, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) had advanced to 8,411.88 points, representing a weekly gain of more than 215 points. The rise in the benchmark index, which tracks the overall performance of all listed equities, signalled strengthened market sentiment and increased buying interest across major counters.
Trading activity for the week, however, fluctuated. The market opened strongly on Monday with 1,277,939 shares, valued at GH¢3.92 million, changing hands. Activity remained nearly identical on Tuesday, with 1,297,447 shares traded at a value of GH¢3.27 million. Midweek saw a notable slowdown, as turnover dropped to 435,139 shares worth GH¢2.09 million on Wednesday. Thursday recorded the lowest activity of the week at 259,113 shares, valued at GH¢1.12 million, as investors took a cautious stance.
The week closed with renewed confidence on Friday, when activity rebounded to 421,111 shares, valued at GH¢1.41 million, helping push the market higher and deepening the day’s gains.
On the financial front, the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) inched up to 4,204.23 points, recording steady but moderate gains. While financial stocks contributed to market stability, the overall rally was driven largely by increased interest in non-financial counters, particularly in the manufacturing, agriculture-linked, and consumer goods sectors.
The broader picture remains even more impressive: since the beginning of 2025, the GSE-CI has surged 72 percent, while the GSE-FSI has appreciated 76.6 percent. These strong year-to-date returns underscore the resilience of the market and the rewards enjoyed by investors who maintained their positions through periods of volatility.
Although daily swings in trading volumes and prices persisted throughout the week, the underlying trend indicates strengthening confidence in Ghana’s equities market. The steady rise in market capitalisation, combined with positive earnings expectations and relative macroeconomic stability, continues to attract both retail and institutional investors seeking growth opportunities.
Ghana’s capital market, buoyed by improving sentiment and deeper liquidity, enters the new week on a solid footing, with investors closely watching whether the upward trajectory can be sustained.
