Samini Explains “Low-Energy” Performance at GJA Awards

Reggae and Dancehall artiste Samini has explained the circumstances behind what many described as a “low-energy” performance at the recently held Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards.

Speaking on Daybreak Hitz, the award-winning musician revealed that he was not originally scheduled to perform at the event and faced significant technical challenges during his set.

“I originally was not billed to perform on that show. My friend, who is the current President of the GJA, called me when I returned to town two days before the event, and that’s how I ended up performing,” he said.

According to Samini, his stage monitors malfunctioned, making it difficult for him to hear himself during the live performance.

“For a live performer, every once in a while, you should expect glitches here and there. With this particular incident, my monitors on stage were off,” he explained.

He noted that such technical issues are common in live shows and recalled having encountered similar problems in the past.

“This is not the first time I’ve been on stage where the monitors didn’t work. Sometimes you can signal the engineer through the mic to fix it, but in this case, I just had to manage the situation,” he added.

Samini also acknowledged that while the organisers had factored musical performances into the programme, technical hitches can happen at any event.

“The organisers did include performances; Akwaboah was officially booked for the event,” he said.

The musician further disclosed that he ended his set early to avoid worsening the situation.

“You have to find a strategic way to exit nicely. I said I would have done more but couldn’t hear myself due to the monitors, so I had to bow out. I even said, ‘Let’s meet at the dinner,’ though I didn’t attend,” he concluded.
