Otto Addo set for history at the North‑America World Cup

‎By Victor Kwawu

Black Stars head coach  Otto Addo is on the verge of another historic feat if he leads the four‑time AFCON champions at the 2026 World Cup. Should the former Borussia Dortmund scout‑coach maintain his current portfolio at the North‑American World Cup, he would join an exclusive group of World‑Cup players who have coached their countries twice at the global showpiece, a distinction worthy of note. This group includes football icons such as Carlos Bilardo (Argentina), Rudi Voller (Germany),  Jürgen Klinsmann(Germany), Didier Deschamps (France),

‎Mario Zagallo (Brazil) and  Franz Beckenbauer (Germany),

‎With Ghana qualifying for the Mundial and awaiting group opponents, Otto has achieved a truly historic milestone, becoming the first African to do so. The former “Black and Yellow” winger represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where the Black Stars finished strong by reaching the round-16 in their maiden appearance.

‎Otto’s first national‑team assignment would come sixteen years later, guiding the Black Stars through a challenging group that featured heavyweights Uruguay, Portugal and South Korea in Qatar 2022, where they bowed out in the group stage.

‎Interestingly, he might also become the only non‑European or South‑American to achieve this distinction. As Ghana looks forward to an improved performance on their quarter‑final appearance 15 years ago on South African soil.

‎Otto Addo’s stint with the Black Stars has been marred by a few infamous losses and the biggest of all, the 2025 AFCON failure; however, it is significant to applaud his resilience and never‑dying attitude in the face of these turbulent storms as the team looks ahead to the expanded World Cup to be co‑hosted in Mexico, Canada and the USA.
