West Africa’s Energy leaders to meet in Accra for Clean Energy Summit

Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has been named as the patron of the West Africa Energy Cooperation Summit (WAECS), which will take place in Accra from December 2 to 3, 2025.
The Summit will bring together regional leaders, investors, and industry players to discuss new investment opportunities and projects aimed at improving energy access and regional integration by 2030.
WAECS 2025, themed “Building Regional Resilience,” is expected to highlight opportunities for cooperation and innovation in energy development across West Africa.
This year, the African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) joins as the lead sponsor, with Endeavour Energy and Denham Capital also supporting. The sponsors say their goal is to promote sustainable energy projects and stronger regional cooperation.
ATIDI, which provides insurance for investments across Africa, currently has a portfolio worth about USD 8.9 billion. Its Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF) helps Independent Power Producers manage payment risks.
The organization has supported projects such as the 42MW Sokodé Solar Plant in Togo, which it says has helped build investor confidence and expand clean energy access.
According to organizers, the Summit will serve as a platform to attract financing and promote collaboration under the ECOWAS energy integration agenda. It will focus on renewable energy, gas-to-power projects, digitalization of energy systems, and cross-border power trade.
Sessions will explore how to fund and de-risk clean energy projects, improve transmission networks, and expand private sector involvement in off-grid and distributed energy markets.
Participants will also discuss the role of innovation and digital tools in improving energy access and grid reliability across urban and rural areas.
Ghana’s Energy Transition Framework outlines a plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2070 through clean energy generation, energy efficiency, and increased investment in renewables, especially solar.
The plan also seeks to encourage private investment and strengthen regional power trade to build a competitive and sustainable energy sector that supports industrial growth.
High-level participants at WAECS 2025 include Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Vice President of Liberia; John Abdulai Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition; Dr. Dele Alake, Nigeria’s Minister for Solid Minerals Development; and Nani Juwara, Gambia’s Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mines.
They will be joined by senior officials such as Edward Obeng-Kenzo, Acting CEO of the Volta River Authority (VRA); Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, CEO of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN); and Eunice Biritwum, Acting Executive Secretary of Ghana’s Energy Commission. Other contributors include Cenpower Generation, Gridworks Partners, Wärtsilä Marine and Power Services Nigeria, Stanbic Bank Ghana, Tema Oil Refinery, and Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor said Ghana is honored to host this year’s Summit, describing it as a chance to deepen regional cooperation and attract new investment into the energy sector.
“We are also pleased that the YES! On The Road Ghana scheduled for 3-4 December 2025 will be hosted alongside WAECS. This emphasis is in line with Ghana’s emphasis on youth empowerment and skills empowerment under it energy transition framework. It will empower and inspire the next generation of African energy leaders by connecting young talents with seasoned, mentors, innovators and investors”, he said.
