ECOWAS and Germany Hold High-level Talks in Abuja

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Government of Germany have begun a two-day high-level negotiation meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, to strengthen their long-standing partnership.
The talks, which run from the 4th to the 5th of November 2025, bring together senior officials from both sides to discuss ways of deepening cooperation in areas such as peace and regional security, economic development, political integration, climate change, energy transition, and public health.
Leading the discussions are the ECOWAS Vice-President, Her Excellency Mrs. Damtien L. Tchintchibidja; Germany’s Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Her Excellency Annett Günther; and Mr. Christoph Rauh, Director for Africa at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
As part of the visit, the German delegation paid a courtesy call on the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray. During the meeting, Mr. Rauh reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting West Africa’s peace and stability while also boosting economic growth through private-sector investment and regional trade.
Dr. Touray expressed deep appreciation to the German Government for its continuous support to ECOWAS over the years. He said the discussions reflect the two sides’ shared vision for sustainable development, strong institutions, and improved livelihoods for the people of West Africa.
The ECOWAS Vice-President, Mrs. Tchintchibidja, described the talks as a vital step toward reinforcing regional cooperation and ensuring a more prosperous and peaceful West Africa.
The high-level engagement highlights the close partnership between ECOWAS and Germany and their joint determination to promote peace, stability, and sustainable progress across the region.
