WAEC Denies Allegations of Withholding Exam Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted media reports claiming that the results of over 34,000 candidates have been withheld over alleged examination malpractice.

Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Mr. John Kapi, clarified that the Council has not issued any official statement to that effect, describing the reports as “factually inaccurate and misleading.”

Speaking in a media interview, Mr. Kapi explained that while the Council is currently investigating certain irregularities detected during the just-ended examinations, no official figures have been released.

“We have not released any official statement. I’ve seen the statement being circulated myself, but there are a lot of factual inaccuracies in it. We are still dealing with the issues and have not concluded investigations,” he said.

He noted that WAEC deployed a more comprehensive inspection and monitoring system during this year’s examinations to safeguard the integrity of the process. Despite these measures, a few incidents of malpractice were still recorded.

“We had people all over the country monitoring the exams. Of course, there were still some bad nuts in the system, and so we recorded a number of irregularities. However, it is not true that we have withheld the results of over 34,000 candidates. For now, no, we haven’t put any figures out,” Mr. Kapi stressed.

Earlier reports circulating online alleged that the results of 34,563 candidates had been withheld due to collusion, impersonation, and the use of unauthorised materials, citing what appeared to be a WAEC statement.

The Council has since discredited the document and assured the public that any official communication regarding withheld results will be made only after the Examinations Committee completes its review.WAEC further urged students, parents, and the public to rely solely on its verified channels for accurate information and updates on examination outcomes.
