Financial Stocks Drive GSE Strong October Close

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) ended October on a strong note, as solid gains in key financial stocks powered the market to one of its best monthly finishes in 2025. Investor confidence appeared to deepen, with major indices recording significant advances amid renewed momentum in the banking sector.

By the close of trading on Friday, October 31, 2025, the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) had risen by 43.48 points to settle at 8,385.35 points, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) surged by 61 points to close at 4,193.90 points. The market’s overall capitalization climbed to GH¢166.54 billion, underscoring improved investor sentiment and expectations of a strong finish to the year.

Trading activity remained brisk but measured, with about 1.12 million shares changing hands at a total value of GH¢1.99 million. The session was marked by a mix of profit-taking and renewed buying interest, as investors rebalanced their portfolios ahead of the new month.

The standout performers were, once again, the banks. Ecobank Ghana PLC (EGH) led the rally, posting a notable GH¢1.40 increase to close at GH¢15.44 per share, representing nearly a 10% rise in a single session. Société Générale Ghana PLC (SOGEGH) followed closely with a gain of GH¢0.31 to close at GH¢3.41, also reflecting a 10% improvement. Their strong showing helped lift overall market performance and demonstrated the resilience of Ghana’s financial sector amid improving macroeconomic conditions.

Other gainers included Clydestone (Ghana) PLC (CLYD), which inched up by GH¢0.02 to end the session at GH¢0.28. However, a few counters experienced mild declines. Cal Bank PLC (CAL) dropped GH¢0.05 to GH¢0.49, a 9.26% dip, while Ecobank Transnational Inc. (ETI) eased by GH¢0.01 to GH¢0.99. Unilever Ghana PLC (UNIL) also fell slightly by GH¢0.01 to close at GH¢19.79.  Despite these minor setbacks, market sentiment remained overwhelmingly positive. Analysts note that the GSE’s performance reflects renewed confidence in the local economy, buoyed by stable inflation trends, improved fiscal management, and strong third-quarter corporate results across the financial sector.

So far in 2025, the GSE Composite Index has gained 71.53%, while the Financial Stocks Index has advanced an impressive 76.16%, positioning the market among Africa’s top-performing bourses this year.

As October gives way to November, investors remain cautiously optimistic. With financial stocks maintaining their momentum and broader economic indicators showing stability, the Ghana Stock Exchange appears well-poised to extend its winning streak into the final quarter of 2025.
