MTN Ghana has recorded an 11.4 percent increase in active data subscribers, reaching 18.9 million users in its latest quarterly performance, underscoring the telecom giant’s continued dominance in Ghana’s fast-growing digital communications market.
The growth, equivalent to nearly two million new users added over the period, reflects rising consumer demand for internet access, online payments, social media, and digital entertainment, which are increasingly shaping everyday life and business activity across the country.
Industry analysts say MTN’s expansion cements its position as the market leader in both mobile and data services, even as competition intensifies and user expectations grow.
Data remains one of MTN’s strongest revenue streams, supported by its nationwide 4G rollout, growing smartphone penetration, and investment in fibre connectivity to improve service quality and coverage. The company has consistently expanded its network capacity to meet the surging traffic volumes driven by streaming, mobile banking, and remote work.
However, the impressive growth comes amid widespread complaints from customers over slow internet speeds, network congestion, and periodic service disruptions. Over recent months, several users and businesses have voiced frustration about inconsistent data performance that has affected productivity, digital transactions, and access to streaming platforms.
MTN Ghana has acknowledged the challenges, attributing recent service interruptions to network maintenance and high usage spikes, especially in rapidly urbanizing areas such as Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi.
In response, the company says it is prioritizing network modernization and capacity expansion, particularly in regional towns and underserved communities, as part of its broader plan to enhance service reliability and digital inclusion.
The telecom operator has been ramping up the deployment of 4G and 4G+ sites and strengthening its partnerships in the fintech and digital entertainment sectors to deliver a more seamless user experience. MTN Ghana’s ongoing investments align with government efforts to promote digital transformation under the National Digital Economy Policy, which seeks to extend high-speed connectivity and digital services to every part of the country.
Despite user frustrations, analysts note that the steady rise in data subscriptions demonstrates the company’s resilience and the increasing centrality of mobile internet in Ghana’s social and economic life.
For millions of users, MTN remains the gateway to communication, commerce, and content, a position it hopes to sustain by improving the quality of service while meeting the growing digital appetite of Ghanaians.
