Catholic Bishops call on Vice-President as church marks 75 years in Ghana

A delegation of Catholic Bishops, led by His Eminence Cardinal Wilfred Napier, Special Envoy of Pope Leo XIV, has paid a courtesy call on Vice-President Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman as part of activities marking the 75th Jubilee Celebration of the establishment of the Catholic Church hierarchy in Ghana.

During the visit, Cardinal Napier conveyed the Holy Father’s goodwill to the Vice-President and the people of Ghana.

He commended the Government for its efforts in stabilising the nation’s economy and highlighted the positive progress made in recent years. The Cardinal also offered prayers for continued peace, prosperity, and good governance for both the government and citizens.

Vice-President Opoku Agyeman expressed her appreciation for the Catholic Church’s significant role in human development across Ghana. She praised the Church’s extensive social interventions in education, health, and community service, noting their transformative impact on countless lives nationwide.

“The Church’s work continues to have a transformative impact on many lives across the country,” she said.

The Vice-President also acknowledged the longstanding partnership between the Government of Ghana and the Catholic Church, emphasising their shared commitment to building a legacy of integrity, inclusion, and hope for future generations.

“Our African and Christian values of compassion and care for one another must continue to guide our actions,” she stressed.

Reiterating the government’s dedication to creating an environment that nurtures the skills and potential of Ghanaians, Prof Opoku Agyeman underscored the need for sustained collaboration between the Church and the State. She highlighted key national issues such as corruption and inequality that require joint efforts to address effectively.

“We need continued collaboration between the Church and the State to address challenges such as corruption and inequality,” the Vice-President added.
