Kotoko’s only motivation now is to sell players abroad –Sarfo Duku
Asante Kotoko Communications Director Sarfo Duku has revealed that the club’s primary motivation in the Ghana Premier League has shifted towards generating revenue through player sales rather than solely focusing on winning trophies.
His comments come in the wake of the transfer of prolific striker Albert Amoah to Libyan side Al Ahli Benghazi, just six matches into the new season. Amoah, who scored 16 goals in 30 league appearances for the Porcupine Warriors, has been one of the team’s standout performers, and his departure has stirred debate among supporters regarding its timing.
“Let me be frank with you; the only motivation left in our game today is to get the opportunity to sell one or two players abroad.
“Otherwise, a time will come when clubs will have to beg to raise funds. The matches are not fetching us money, sponsors are not coming because of economic reasons, and so who do we blame? If an opportunity comes and Kotoko has to be run, why not?,” Duku said.
Kotoko’s decision to sell their top forward came shortly after their 5-1 defeat to Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco, which ended their participation in the CAF Champions League.
Addressing the club’s continental ambitions, Duku admitted that Kotoko are not yet in a position to compete financially with Africa’s top sides.
“If the aim is to win continental trophies, I don’t think we are there yet because we are not well-resourced. Look at how their (Wydad’s) fans were organised,” he noted.
