Education Minister directs use of mother tongue in schools

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to strictly enforce the use of mother tongue instruction in all Ghanaian schools.
According to the minister, the directive forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting local languages in teaching and learning.
Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons Living with Disabilities, Mr Iddrisu said the initiative seeks to strengthen the use of Ghanaian languages as a medium of instruction, especially at the basic education level, to improve comprehension and learning outcomes.
“I am directing the Director-General of the GES that from today, the use of mother tongue instruction by teachers is compulsory in all Ghanaian schools.
“The GES must ensure strict enforcement of this. This is part of President Mahama’s reset agenda,” he stated.
The minister added that promoting local languages is key to improving literacy and ensuring that pupils fully understand lessons at the foundational level.
