GSE sees surge in trading as financial stocks lead gains

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi
Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) surged sharply as investors showed renewed interest in financial stocks, even though the overall market index edged lower.
A total of 1.53 million shares, valued at GHS2.74 million, changed hands, a significant jump from Monday’s 220,174 shares worth GHS440,603.87.
The rebound in market activity reflected growing investor confidence, particularly in the banking sector, which recorded several price gains.
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI), which measures the overall market performance, dipped slightly by 21.76 points to close at 8,468.44 points, reflecting mild profit-taking.
The market capitalisation, representing the total value of all listed firms, eased marginally from GHS168.02 billion on Monday to GHS167.74 billion.
Banking Stocks Dominate Gains
Among the top performers, CalBank PLC rose to GHS0.90, Societe Generale Ghana PLC climbed to GHS2.41, and GCB Bank PLC gained to GHS15.60.
Smaller-cap financial technology firm Clydestone Ghana PLC also recorded a modest uptick to GHS0.19, while consumer goods company Fan Milk PLC improved to GHS7.99. The only decline on the day came from NewGold ETF, which slipped to GHS447.65.
Market Outlook Remains Positive
Despite Tuesday’s slight pullback in the main index, the year-to-date performance of the GSE remains robust.
The Composite Index has gained 73.23 per cent, while the Financial Stocks Index has surged 71.31 per cent, underscoring the strong recovery and investor optimism in Ghana’s equity market.
