Ghana will go to 2026 World Cup confident – Jerome Opoku

Istanbul Basaksehir centre-back Jerome Opoku says the Black Stars are heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with great optimism and belief in their potential to shine on the global stage.
The defender, who played a role in Ghana’s qualification campaign, described the team’s progress as a sign of growing unity and ambition. Ghana booked their place at the World Cup after a commanding 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic and a narrow 1-0 win against Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium, topping Group I with 25 points.
Opoku expressed his desire to be part of the final squad for the tournament to be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
“I’m keeping my head down and working hard. I’ll only celebrate when the final list comes out and my name is on it. Until then, it’s about staying committed, improving my game, and helping the team in every way I can,” he said.
Opoku believes Ghana’s blend of talent, teamwork, and determination could see them go far in the competition.
“The World Cup is every footballer’s dream and I’m praying to be there. This team is growing stronger with every camp. We are learning each other’s strengths and understanding the coach’s vision. Once everything connects, we will be a difficult side to face.
“Ghana has always been fearless on the big stage. We will go to the World Cup with confidence and the belief that anything is possible,” he added.
The Black Stars will be making their fifth World Cup appearance after previous participations in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022. Their best run came in South Africa in 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals.
