World Cup won’t influence my decision to play for Ghana – Francis Amuzu

Francis Amuzu is one of many players who have come under heavy scrutiny after the Black Stars of Ghana qualified for their fifth World Cup, to be staged in North America.
Like Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi, Amuzu has been trending in recent weeks for allegedly snubbing a Ghana national team call-up a few years ago.
However, the former Belgian youth international has clarified that his decision to represent Ghana is not motivated by the prospect of featuring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Gremio forward, in an interview with a Brazilian outlet, reaffirmed his commitment to play for the West African nation after the Black Stars secured qualification for their fifth World Cup appearance.
Amuzu, who previously turned down a national team invitation in 2022, said his choice was rooted in pride, not opportunism.
“I was born in Ghana, so I am happy they qualified for the World Cup. It is a wonderful tournament to play in,” he said.
His declaration has stirred mixed reactions among fans and pundits, with some questioning the timing of his decision. The former Anderlecht forward insisted that his commitment goes beyond the World Cup.
“If it is for the World Cup, it will be nice. If it is after the World Cup, it is also nice; I will be happy. It is a dream for me to play for the national team of Ghana. I know I have to perform well to get a call-up. If it comes, good. If it does not, I have to work harder,” Amuzu said.
Born in Accra but raised in Belgium, the 25-year-old has previously represented the Red Devils at under-19 and under-21 levels. Ghana will learn about its group opponents on 5 December, when the draw is conducted.
